Asset Depletion Period for Social Assistance: how long may you save?

Does your assets exceed the limit? Then an asset depletion period applies. This article explains how long you must wait for social assistance and under what conditions.

What is the asset depletion period?

If your assets exceed the social assistance limit, you must first 'deplete' it. The period is a maximum of two years (24 months), depending on the excess. During this period, you will receive no or reduced social assistance.

Calculation of the period

  • Small excess: Shorter period, starting from 1 month.
  • Large amounts: Full 24 months, calculated via formula: excess / monthly social assistance.
  • Exception in case of illness: Period may be suspended.

After expiry, you can apply again. Proof of expenditure is not required, but the municipality checks for sale of non-exempt assets. This prevents abuse and encourages self-reliance.
