Exceptions to the Social Assistance Asset Limit: What Does Not Count?

Exemptions such as own home, household contents and car do not count towards the social assistance asset limit. WWB Article 41 provides scope for essential possessions.

Not all your possessions count towards the social assistance asset limit. The Work and Social Assistance Act (WWB) provides exemptions for essential items. In 2024, you may retain unlimited: own home (up to WOZ value), household contents up to €12,000 per person, clothing, furniture and household appliances. Also a car up to €3,600 in value (for job seekers €11,500 if transport is needed) and study funds do not count. Pension accrual via annuity is exempt up to certain limits. Inheritances or gifts must be reported within 8 weeks, but cadastrally valuable land for hobbies may be exempt. Article 41 WWB and Social Assistance Decree specify this. Holiday pay or periodic income counts as income, not assets. Municipalities assess individually: medically necessary aids such as a mobility scooter are often exempt. Providing proof is crucial. If exceeded: benefit stops. Request an 'asset investigation' for clarity. These exceptions ensure that social assistance secures basic needs without depriving everything.
