The landlord must legally pay interest on the deposit from day one of the tenancy. Article 7:204 of the Dutch Civil Code (BW) sets the statutory interest rate, currently approximately 2-6% depending on the year. This interest is due until full repayment. Request an annual statement on pain of limitation. In case of non-payment, you can claim it via a demand letter. Keep all correspondence. In practice, many landlords deposit the deposit into a blocked account with a foundation such as Woonborg. Check this at the start of the tenancy. In case of negligence: Rent Tribunal or district court. (197 words)
