Eligibility for Rent Benefit: Conditions and Calculation

Rent benefit compensates low incomes for renting below the liberalisation threshold. In 2024, eligibility depends on income, assets, rent price, and household composition. A maximum of €400 per month is available for single-person households with a minimum income.

Conditions for Rent Benefit

You qualify if your rent is below €879.66, your income is under €26,000 (for single-person households), and you are at least 18 years old. The landlord may not be the main tenant.

Calculate Your Benefit

Use the online calculation tool at toeslagen.nl. The formula is: Benefit = (Eligible rent - personal contribution) x factor. The personal contribution increases with income.

  • Rent Benefit Act Art. 6: Income test.
  • Recalculation: Annually based on the provisional assessment.

Application and Changes

Apply digitally via Mijn toeslagen. Report changes within 8 weeks to avoid reclaims. In cases of disproportionate housing, the benefit often stops abruptly.
