Recalculation of Rent Benefit Cap After Income Change

Job loss or promotion affects your rent benefit cap. Learn how to request a recalculation and avoid reclaims.

When to Recalculate?

Income changes such as dismissal, retirement, or additional income from side jobs trigger a recalculation. The Tax and Customs Administration adjusts the rent benefit cap based on your provisional assessment or final tax return. If your income falls below the cap, your benefit increases retroactively; if it rises above the cap, repayment may be required.

You have 8 weeks after the change to report it. Example: If your income decreases from €28,000 to €22,000, you may receive an additional €100 per month.

Legal Basis

Article 19 of the Housing Allowance Act and the General State Taxes Act. Reclaims are limited to 5 years.
