Supplementary Care Allowance in Addition to Double Child Benefit

Maximize benefits: how to combine double child benefit with care allowance, application steps, and pitfalls.

Double child benefit (under Article 30 of the Work and Care Act (WKOK)) is an additional payment from the Employee Insurance Agency (UWV) for children with severe disabilities. However, parents may also claim a care allowance through the Dutch Tax and Customs Administration. This amounts to €128 to €1,169 per month, depending on income and care intensity. Combination with the Healthcare Allowance (IZ) is possible, provided there is no overlap in care coverage. The application requires a decision from the Dutch Care Assessment Centre (CIZ) or UWV, as well as income details. A key condition is that the child must be under 18 and require at least 2 hours of intensive care per week. In case of changes (e.g., relocation), this must be reported immediately to prevent repayment obligations. Appeals against the rejection of a care allowance follow the General Administrative Law Act (Awb) procedure at the Dutch Tax and Customs Administration. Tip: Use the Care Guide to calculate the maximum allowance. This supplements child benefit without double funding for the same care.
